"Em Dezembro de 1496, o rei D. Manuel assina o Édito de Expulsão dos judeus de Portugal, após séculos de convivência ora pacífica, ora atribulada no seio da cristandade. Este édito seria um dos grandes motores da dispersão pelo mundo dos judeus que não se converteram ao cristianismo em Portugal e que foram, assim, obrigados a rumar para outros destinos. Cristãos-novos e por vezes judeus encontrariam em alguns dos espaços ocupados pelos portugueses formas diversas, específicas, híbridas e criativas de perpetuar a sua identidade judaica. Este congresso propõe-se reunir investigadores que tenham feito pesquisas relativamente a esta presença de judeus e de cristãos-novos em territórios lusófonos, e sobre judeus que com eles interagiram. Corridos mais de 500 anos da expulsão dos judeus de Portugal, é certo que persistem comunidades judaicas com alguma ligação à matriz portuguesa ou que restam testemunhos dessa presença no passado, nas várias dimensões da cultura, da história, da língua, do património ou das práticas sociais. Serão, por isso, bem acolhidos todos os contributos que permitam consolidar e incrementar o conhecimento científico, seja na área dos estudos judaicos, seja dos estudos culturais, seja das ciências sociais e humanas, acerca deste novo tema dos Judeus na Lusofonia."
"On December, 1496, King Manuel signed the Edict of Expulsion of the Jews from Portugal, after centuries of sometimes peaceful, sometimes troubled coexistence within Christianity. This edict would be one of the great propellers of the Jews dispersion worldwide. Conversos and sometimes Jews would find also in some of the territories occupied by Portuguese, diverse, specific, hybrid and creative ways to perpetuate their Jewish identity. This conference intends to bring together researchers who have done research on this Jewish and converso presence in Lusophone territories and on Jews who interacted with them. Accrued over 500 years of expulsion of the Jews from Portugal, there certainly persist Jewish communities with some connection to the Portuguese matrix or there remain testimonies of their presence in the past, regarding the various dimensions of culture, history, language, heritage or social practices. All contributions that allow to consolidate and increase the scientific knowledge on this subject of Jews in Lusophone world, whether integrated in the field of the Jewish studies, cultural studies, social and human sciences will therefore be welcomed."
