Colloque international "Capture, Bondage, and Forced Relocation in Asia (1400-1900)" (ENS de Lyon, 13-14 mars 2019)

"Inspirée par un ensemble de données préliminaires suggérant fortement que le fait esclavagiste et la traite d’êtres humains en Asie pourraient avoir été au moins comparables en nombre à la traite atlantique, cette conférence a pour objectif d’explorer l’esclavage, la dépendance et la traite en Asie dans toute leur profondeur historique ainsi que dans toute leur complexité économique, sociale, politique et culturelle. Réunissant historiens de l’esclavage colonial et des formes locales de dépendance, cette conférence porte l’ambition de mettre en évidence les dynamiques historiques de la traite et des déplacements forcés en Asie prémoderne. Elle sera également l’occasion de présenter plusieurs projets en humanités numériques visant à quantifier et cartographier les traites asiatiques.
Inspired by early data that suggests slave trading in Asia may have been comparable in size to slavery in the Atlantic world, this conference aims to move beyond the Atlantic as a model of inquiry, with its attendant Eurocentric biases. We aim to investigate slavery and slave trading in Asia in all its historical depth and social, economic, political, and cultural complexity. Bringing together specialists of colonial slave trading and of local bondage structures, this conference will foster a more complete picture of the dynamics of forced human transfers and trafficking in early modern Asia. It will also highlight digital humanities projects that seek to quantify and map slave trading networks in Asia."
