About the Role
The School of History wishes to recruit a two-year Postdoctoral Research Assistant to work on a British Academy Sustainable Development-funded project, “Traces of Jewish Memory in Contemporary Tunisia”, led by Dr Daniel Lee (PI). This project, launched in September 2018, is the first interdisciplinary study that investigates and restores awareness of Tunisia’s Jewish past. The successful candidate will work closely with Dr Daniel Lee and Professor Habib Kazdaghli (co-I) investigating Jewish contribution to the creation of modern Tunisia. The project will also engage with Cultural heritage and memorialisation campaigns in Tunisia. It is hoped that the production of new knowledge on the history of a forgotten minority in Tunisia, will reduce antisemitism and stimulate economic growth in the country by creating new cultural initiatives, develop new tourist opportunities and generate jobs for unemployed university graduates. An ambitious outreach programme will take the project’s findings to the general public.

About You

The successful candidate will have a high level of proficiency in English, Arabic and French, and will hold a PhD in a relevant area which will have been awarded before the start of the role. Relevant subject areas include but are not limited to : Middle Eastern and/or North African Studies ; Jewish history ; comparative literature ; history of religion ; cultural history ; philosophy ; intellectual history ; social anthropology ; sociology ; urban studies.

Informal enquiries should be addressed to Dr Daniel Lee at d.lee@qmul.ac.uk.

As part of the application, candidates will need to produce a short document in which they demonstrate in up to 1,000 words, the work they will undertake if appointed to restore awareness of Tunisia’s Jewish past.
