Vient de reparaître en "poche" (paperback) Selling the Congo. A history of European Pro-Empire Propaganda and the Making of Belgian Imperialism de Matthew G. S
tanard aux University of Nebraska Press, 2015 (2012 pour l’édition reliée)), 406 p. ISBN : 978-0-8032-7436-5 Prix : 30 $.
"Belgium was a small, neutral country without a colonial tradition when King Leopold II ceded the Congo, his personal property, to the state in 1908. For the next half century, Belgium not only ruled an African empire but also, through widespread, enduring, and eagerly embraced propaganda, produced an imperialist-minded citizenry.
Selling the Congo is a study of European pro-empire propaganda in Belgium, with particular emphasis on the period 1908–60. Matthew G. Stanard examines the nature of Belgian imperialism in the Congo and considers its case in light of literature on the French, the British, and other European overseas empires. Comparing Belgium to other imperial powers, the book finds that pro-empire propaganda was a basic part of European overseas expansion and administration during the modern period. Arguing against the long-held belief that Belgians were merely “reluctant imperialists,” Stanard demonstrates that in fact many Belgians readily embraced imperialistic propaganda.
Selling the Congo contributes to our understanding of the effectiveness of twentieth-century propaganda by revealing its successes and failures in the Belgian case. Many readers familiar with more-popular histories of Belgian imperialism will find in this book a deeper examination of European involvement in central Africa during the colonial era. "
Matthew G. Stanard is an associate professor of history at Berry College. His articles have appeared in publications such as the Journal of Contemporary History, French Colonial History, and European History Quarterly.Stanard -

"Portugal e o Fim do Colonialismo.

"This collection provides a comprehensive treatment of the German colonial empire and its significance. Leading scholars show not only how the colonies influenced metropolitan life and the character of German politics during the Bismarckian and Wilhelmine eras (1871–1918), but also how colonial mentalities and practices shaped later histories during the Nazi era. In introductory essays, editors Geoff Eley and Bradley Naranch survey the historiography and broad developments in the imperial imaginary of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. Contributors then examine a range of topics, from science and the colonial state to the disciplinary constructions of Africans as colonial subjects for German administrative control. They consider the influence of imperialism on German society and culture via the mass-marketing of imperial imagery ; conceptions of racial superiority in German pedagogy ; and the influence of colonialism on German anti-Semitism. The collection concludes with several essays that address geopolitics and the broader impact of the German imperial experience."

"This book provides an historical critical analysis of the doctrine of the ’civilising mission’ in Portuguese colonialism in the crucial period from 1870 to 1930. Exploring international contexts and transnational connections, imperial politics and colonial policies, this ’civilising mission’ is analysed and assessed by examining the contentious debates about the recruitment, employment and distribution of African manpower, namely over the persistence of slavery, the emergence and legalisation of ’conditions analogous to slavery’, and of other modalities of compulsory labour. ediker au Seuil, "L’Univers historique", 2015, 416 p. ISBN : 9782021213164 Prix : 24 €.

Free and Unfree Workers
In Atlantic and Indian Ocean Port Cities (c. 1700-1850)
Workshop on May 6-7, 2016 at the University of Pittsburgh
Annonce valable jusqu’au 1er septembre 2015
"We invite historians working on free and unfree workers in port cities to send in proposals for a workshop on May 6-7, 2016 at the University of Pittsburgh.
Historians have long treated slave labor and free labor as mutually exclusive ideal types. Recent work has begun to challenge this view, yet research on the connections between free and unfree workers remains limited. Port cities are the perfect setting in which to explore a new, broader, more inclusive labor history for the period 1700-1850.
